Why killing doesn't work

ABC Animal birth control scheme set up by the Indian government to control the dog population by sterilisation as opposed to the traditional method of killing dogs.
It is a proven fact that sterilisation is more effective at controlling the population and is of course much more humane.

Rabies is also a problem among the dogs, therefore when they are in for sterilisation they are also vaccinated against rabies.
In areas of India where this has happened for several years the incidents of rabies are zero. It is the centres aim to produce this same result in Kerala.

our vet and nurse undertaking a steralisation

Dr Arun, " I completed my graduation in the year 2003 and joined the centre in August 2004. In the whole of Kerala state this was the only organisation in which the Animal birth control programme was implemented . I found it really rewarding to be associated with this organisation. We are currently doing nearly 60 sterilisations a month."

Dr Arun sterlises bitches using a technique which involves a small incision to the dog's side. This is the least invasive method of surgery and the dogs recover quickly. He has since taught this method to other vets in the local area ( although the local authority did some steralisations with our help they have abandoned the project at this moment in time and there are no plans to sterilise street dogs although talks are continuing regarding re-opening the project.) Dr Arun is also a trustee of Animal Rescue Kerala Charitable Trust.
